  100. When the Computer Dictionary is started, the words 
  101. "Evaluation Copy" will be displayed to remind the user that 
  102. it is a shareware program.  In one to five days after the 
  103. installation of the Computer Dictionary, a registration reminder 
  104. screen will appear when the Computer Dictionary is first started.
  105. This screen will remind the user that the Computer Dictionary 
  106. is a shareware program and it must be registered.  Press the
  107. "Register" button to display and print the registration form 
  108. for mailing.  Press the "Continue" button to continue using the 
  109. Computer Dictionary while your registration is in the mail.  
  110. Press the "Enter Registration Number" button when
  111. you have received a valid registration number from the Author.
  112. Once a valid registration number is entered, the main starting
  113. screen will show "Registered Version" and the reminder screen will
  114. no longer be displayed.

  116. Registered users of the Computer Dictionary will receive a free
  117. copy of the Hints & Tips booklet which gives over 12 pages of 
  118. useful advice and tricks to enable you to get better use out of 
  119. the Computer Dictionary and, for that matter, any Windows Help 
  120. application.  This booklet is an invaluable tool for all who are
  121. not yet thoroughly proficient with the use of Windows Help
  122. applications.  It gives tips on moving around in topics, choosing
  123. a new topic, all of the menu commands in Windows 3.1 and 
  124. Windows 95 and the button bar commands.

  126. As a registered user, you will be notified of future shareware and
  127. non-shareware releases by the Author.  Registered users will be

  138. This release of the Computer Dictionary for Windows features a 
  139. sample of the Computer Dictionary DELUXE, which is a new and 
  140. better format for learning computer terms.  The terms are arranged
  141. alphabetically in the Computer Dictionary as well as grouped by
  142. categories of related terms in the Computer Dictionary DELUXE.
  143. Hypertext links in the Computer Dictionary jump to the category
  144. in the Computer Dictionary DELUXE which lists all the terms in 
  145. that common category.

  147. The Computer Dictionary DELUXE included with this shareware
  148. includes a sampling of the terms available in the full version.
  149. This sample has 10 categories of terms, whereas the full version
  150. includes over 100 categories.  In the full version, all of the 
  151. terms in the alphabetical listing are linked to categories.

  156. MAKING A COPY FOR A FRIEND
  157. ==========================

  159. The installation program supplied with the Computer Dictionary for
  160. Windows is a very versatile tool.  It can copy the program files 
  161. from a CD-ROM, or from one directory or drive to another on your 
  162. hard disk.  To make a copy of this program for a friend, place a 
  163. blank, formatted high density disk in your Drive A (or B).  Start
  164. the installation program by double clicking the installation 
  165. program icon in the Program Manager or selecting the installation 
  166. program item from the start button menu in Windows 95.  Answer
  167. "YES" to the copy files dialog box.  In the destination directory 
  168. dialog box, type A:\ (or B:\) depending on which drive you are 
  169. using and click OK or press ENTER.  The installation program will 
  170. copy the program files to the disk in that drive.  Then answer 
  171. "NO" to creating icons.

  174. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
  175. ===================

  177. This compendium of over 1001 computer definitions is available at
  178. the click of a button.  These are definitions of the first 
  179. 1001 terms that every computer user should know.  Easy to install
  180. and easier to use, this is a program that belongs on everyone's 
  181. hard disk.  This release features a sample of the Computer 
  182. Dictionary DELUXE, which is a new and better format for learning 
  183. computer terms.  The terms are arranged alphabetically in the 
  184. Dictionary and grouped by category of related terms in the 
  185. Dictionary DELUXE.  Hypertext links in the Dictionary jump to 
  186. the category in the Dictionary DELUXE which lists all the terms 
  187. in that common category.  Written in language that even beginners
  188. can understand, this dictionary is also a useful vocabulary 
  189. reference for long time computer users.  Navigation is easy since
  190. it is presented in the form of a Windows Help file, with 
  191. alphabetical buttons to take the user to each page of terms.  Use
  192. the Page Up and Page Down keys to look through the list of words.
  193. Place the mouse on the word.  Clicking on the selection pops up 
  194. a concise definition.  Symbols (*) and Numbers (#) are also 
  195. available.  The README file includes installation instructions, 
  196. support policy and a registration form.  Registered users will 
  197. automatically receive a hints & tips booklet and a discount on 
  198. future shareware and non-shareware prices.

  201. ATTENTION WINDOWS PROGRAMMERS

  204. The installation program used with the Computer Dictionary is 
  205. available for general use.  It is, in itself, a shareware
  206. program.  You can order your copy of the shareware disk for 
  207. the installation program on the registration form above.

  210. INSTALLATION - READ 1ST
  211. =======================
  212.  
  213. Most likely, you have received this program with all of the files
  214. contained in a single compressed file (typically called
  215. CDICT2.ZIP.)  In this event, you must follow your supplier's
  216. instructions for expanding the compressed file to yield the
  217. individual program files.  Typically, this involves copying the
  218. compressed file to a directory on your hard drive, along with the
  219. expansion program and then running the expansion program (ie:
  220. PKUNZIP CDICT2.ZIP.)  This will expand the files into a usable
  221. form.  After expansion, or if you received the files already
  222. expanded, continue with the installation instructions below.
  223.  
  224. =======================
  225. INSTALLATION IN WINDOWS
  226. =======================
  227.  
  228. GENERAL:
  229.  
  230. There are a variety of ways to install this program in Windows. 
  231. The easiest is to use the installation utility provided with the
  232. program files.  This INSTALL program gives you the option of
  233. performing either of two tasks.  If you wish, the installation
  234. program will copy the program files from where they are now to
  235. another directory on your hard drive and/or create a group with
  236. icons in your Windows Program Manager.  You will be asked to
  237. confirm your desire to copy files and/or create icons in the
  238. Program Manager.  For example, you may elect to leave the files
  239. where they are and just create the icons.  If you choose "NO" to
  240. both operations, the installation program will not do anything at
  241. all.
  242.  
  243. FOR WINDOWS 3.1:
  244.  
  245. To run the installation program, start Windows by typing WIN from
  246. a DOS prompt.  From the Program Manager's main menu, choose File,
  247. Run (keystrokes ALT+F, R).  Type the path and the file name
  248. INSTALL.  For example, if the files are on a disk in the A drive,
  249. type A:INSTALL and press OK.  If the files are in a directory
  250. called TEMP on your C drive, type C:\TEMP\INSTALL and press OK. 
  251. If you are not sure of the full path name, choose the "Browse"
  252. button and locate and highlight the INSTALL file and press OK
  253. twice.  The installation program should now start.
  254.  
  255. FOR WINDOWS 95:
  256.  
  257. To run the installation program from Windows 95, click on the 
  258. Start button and then choose run.  Type the path and the file name
  259. INSTALL.  For example, if the files are on a disk in the A drive,
  260. type A:INSTALL and press OK.  If the files are in a directory
  261. called TEMP on your C drive, type C:\TEMP\INSTALL and press OK. 
  262. If you are not sure of the full path name, choose the "Browse"
  263. button and locate and highlight the INSTALL file and press OPEN 
  264. and OK.  Alternately, you may open "My Computer" and go to the
  265. location of the installation program and double click the INSTALL 
  266. icon.  The installation program should now start.
  267.  
  268. START THE INSTALLATION:
  269.  
  270. The first part of the INSTALL program will ask you if you want
  271. the files copied to another directory on your hard drive.  If you
  272. do not, click the NO button or type N and the files will not be
  273. copied elsewhere. If you want the files elsewhere, choose the YES
  274. button or type Y.  If the files are now on a disk in a floppy
  275. drive or a temporary directory, it is recommended that you choose
  276. YES (click the YES button or type Y) to copy the files to their
  277. own directory.  Next, you will be asked to choose a path and
  278. directory to place the files.  The recommendation of the CDICT
  279. directory on the C drive (C:\CDICT) is filled in.  If this is not
  280. satisfactory, type in the path and directory you desire.  When
  281. you are finished typing or if the default is satisfactory, choose
  282. OK (click the OK button or press ENTER.)  The program files will 
  283. now be copied to the directory of your choice.  This may take 
  284. some time depending on the current location of the files and the 
  285. speed of your computer, so please be patient.  You are advised of 
  286. the progress of the file copying process.  If your screen saver 
  287. should come on during this operation, just move your mouse to 
  288. turn it off so you can see the screen display.
  289.  
  290. The second part of the installation program will ask you if you
  291. want the icons for the program created in the Program Manager. 
  292. If you choose NO, you will have to create the icons yourself to
  293. start and run the program.  If you choose YES, the program icons
  294. will be created and placed in a new Computer Dictionary group in
  295. the Program Manager.  The installation program will now end.
  296.  
  297. To start the Computer Dictionary for Windows, double click on the
  298. Computer Dictionary icon or click once on the icon and press
  299. ENTER.  You will be greeted by a welcome screen and then the
  300. dictionary will start.  Instructions for using the dictionary are
  301. on the first screen (CONTENTS screen) of the dictionary.

  303. ====================
  304. INSTALLATION IN OS/2
  305. ====================
  306.  
  307. The Computer Dictionary for Windows can be run in a Windows
  308. session or WIN/OS2 session under the OS/2 operating system.  To
  309. install this program in OS/2, first start a Windows session or
  310. WIN/OS2 session from the OS/2 desktop.  Once in the Windows
  311. session proceed with the installation instructions above for a
  312. Windows 3.1 installation.
  313.

  318. When you receive the Computer Dictionary for Windows, it should
  319. have the following files:

  334. You should keep a copy of the original file(s) that you received
  335. in case you want to reinstall the program or pass it on 
  336. to a friend.

  339. MANUAL INSTALLATION
  340. ===================

  342. If you have received this program with all of the files contained
  343. in a single compressed file (typically called CDICT2.ZIP), you
  344. must follow your supplier's instructions for expanding the
  345. compressed file to yield the individual program files before you
  346. can install the program.
  347.  
  348. The following instructions will assume that the program files are
  349. already expanded and located on a disk in your A drive.  Simply
  350. substitute a different path (location) for the "A:" in the
  351. instructions if your files are elsewhere.  These instructions
  352. will also assume that it is acceptable to you to create a
  353. subdirectory on your C hard drive called "CDICT" which will
  354. contain the program files.  It is recommended to run the Computer
  355. Dictionary for Windows from the hard drive because it will make
  356. the program run faster.
  357.  
  358. Place the disk in the A drive if you have not already done so, or
  359. remember the location (path) of the files.  Go to a DOS command
  360. prompt or open a DOS command prompt in Windows.
  361.  
  362. To print this file for reference type:  
  363.          COPY A:\README.TXT PRN
  364.  
  365. To make a directory and copy the files from the disk, type the
  366. following commands and press ENTER after each:
  367.  
  368.    C:                      To make the C drive active
  369.    CD \                    Change to the root directory
  370.    MD CDICT                Make the new directory
  371.    A:                      Change to the A drive
  372.    COPY A:\*.* C:\CDICT    Copy the files from A to C:\CDICT
  373.  
  374. Remember to substitute different locations in the above
  375. instructions if necessary.  If you are at a DOS command prompt,
  376. type WIN and press ENTER to start Windows.  If you are in a DOS
  377. session in Windows, type EXIT and press ENTER to return to the
  378. Program Manager.
  379.  
  380. If you are in Windows 95, click on the Start button and choose
  381. Run.  In the dialog box, enter C:\WINDOWS\PROGMAN.EXE.  This will
  382. start the Program Manager.  Follow the instructions below.  When 
  383. you are finished with the installation, choose File/Exit to 
  384. leave the Program Manager and return to Windows 95.
  385.  
  386. In the Windows Program Manager, create a new group to hold the
  387. program icons, by selecting menu item File, New, Program Group,
  388. OK (keystrokes ALT+F, N, G and press ENTER.)  Type a name for
  389. the new group "Computer Dictionary" and press ENTER.  The new
  390. group should now appear in the Program Manager.  Leave this group
  391. active in the Program Manager while you create the icons in the
  392. next step.
  393.  
  394. To create the icons, select File, New, New Program Item, OK
  395. (keystrokes ALT+F, N and press ENTER.)  Type the title for the
  396. first icon as "Computer Dictionary" and press TAB.  Next, type
  397. the command line to execute the program "C:\CDICT\COMPDICT.EXE"
  398. and click OK or press ENTER.  A new icon called "Computer
  399. Dictionary" should now appear in the group.  To run the program,
  400. double click this icon or highlight the icon and press ENTER.

  402. Although this README file and the registration form are also
  403. contained within the Computer Dictionary for Windows, it may be
  404. convenient to have them available also from the Program Manager. 
  405. To create icons for these items, (keeping the Computer Dictionary
  406. group active) select File, New, New Program Item, OK (keystrokes
  407. ALT+F, N and press ENTER.)  Type the title for the first icon as
  408. "Readme" and press TAB.  Next, type the command line 
  409. "NOTEPAD C:\CDICT\README.TXT" and click OK or press ENTER.  To
  410. add an icon for the registration form, select File, New, New
  411. Program Item, OK (keystrokes ALT+F, N and press ENTER.)  Type
  412. the title for the next icon as "Registration Form" and press TAB. 
  413. Next, type the command line "NOTEPAD C:\CDICT\REGISTER.TXT" and
  414. click OK or press ENTER.
  415.     
  416. Double click or highlight the registration form icon and press
  417. ENTER. This will start Windows Notepad and load the registration
  418. form for this shareware.  You may fill in the requested
  419. information or print a blank copy to be filled in by hand.  In
  420. Notepad, select File, Print (keystrokes ALT+F, P) to print a
  421. copy of the registration form for mailing.  Enclose the
  422. registration form and your check in an envelope to the author to
  423. register the software.

  426. IN CASE OF INSTALLATION DIFFICULTY
  427. ==================================

  429. In case of difficulty installing this program, first expand the
  430. program files as instructed by your supplier.  Start Windows by
  431. typing WIN at the DOS command prompt.  When the Program Manager
  432. screen appears, use your mouse to select from the main menu 
  433. File, Run (keystrokes ALT+F, R.)  Type the following command
  434. followed by the path to the current location of the program files
  435. (in this example it is assumed that the files are on a disk in
  436. the A drive):
  437.      WINHELP A:\COMPDICT.HLP    Press ENTER or click OK.
  438. (If the disk is in the B drive, substitute B: for A: above.)
  439. (If the disk you received has the files compressed, follow
  440. the vendor's instructions for expanding the files.  Once
  441. expanded, replace the A: in the command line above with
  442. the path (ex: C:\CDICT) where you located the expanded files.)
  443.  
  444. The Computer Dictionary will start.  This means you are 
  445. running the program from the disk OR the current location of the
  446. files.  The disk or the main file is not damaged.  You should try
  447. the installation procedure, above, again.
  448.  
  449. If the main program runs, but the installation program does not,
  450. the initialization file might be damaged.  To restore this file,
  451. run the installation program.  Answer "YES" to copying the files
  452. and when the dialog box appears to ask you where to place the
  453. files, press TAB twice to highlight the destination directory.
  454. Instead of entering a destination directory name, type the 
  455. word "DEFAULT" and press OK or press TAB and then ENTER.  The
  456. program will write the correct values into the initialization
  457. file and ask you again if you wish to copy the files to another
  458. directory.  Try the installation procedure, above, again.
  459.  
  460. If the program does not start, the disk or files you have may
  461. have been damaged.  Contact your distributor for a replacement.

  467. If you find this program useful and find that you are using the 
  468. Computer Dictionary for Windows after 30 DAYS, you MUST make a
  469. registration payment of $5.00 to Gary FitzGerald.  The $5.00
  470. registration fee will license one copy for use on any one
  471. computer at any one time.  You must treat this software just like
  472. a book.  An example is that this software may be used by any
  473. number of people and may be freely moved from one computer
  474. location to another, so long as there is no possibility of it
  475. being used at one location while it's being used at another. 
  476. Just as a book cannot be read by two different persons at the
  477. same time.

  479. Computer Dictionary for Windows is a "shareware program" and is
  480. provided at no charge to the user for evaluation.  Feel free to
  481. share it with your friends, but please do not give it away
  482. altered or as part of another system.  The essence of
  483. "user-supported" software is to provide personal computer users
  484. with quality software without high prices, and yet to provide
  485. incentive for programmers to continue to develop new products.

  565. DEFINITION OF SHAREWARE

  568. Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software 
  569. before buying it.  If you try a Shareware program and continue 
  570. using it, you are expected to register it.  Individual programs 
  571. differ on details -- some request registration while others 
  572. require it, some specify a maximum trial period.  With 
  573. registration, you get anything from the simple right to 
  574. continue using the software to an updated program with printed
  575. manual.  Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial
  576. software, and the copyright holder retains all rights, with a
  577. few specific exceptions as stated below.  Shareware authors are
  578. accomplished programmers, just like commercial authors, and the
  579. programs are of comparable quality. (In both cases, there are 
  580. good programs and bad ones!)  The main difference is in the
  581. method of distribution.  The author specifically grants the 
  582. right to copy and distribute the software, either to all
  583. and sundry or to a specific group.  For example, some authors
  584. require written permission before a commercial disk vendor may
  585. copy their Shareware.

  588. You should find software that suits your needs and pocketbook,
  589. whether it's commercial or Shareware.  The Shareware system

  596. UNINSTALLING THE SOFTWARE

  599. All of the files for this software are contained in one directory
  600. (C:\CDICT if you accepted the default.)  To uninstall the
  601. software, delete the files in the directory and remove the
  602. directory.  Then delete the icons and new group, if created, in
  603. the Program Manager.
  604.  
  605. To delete the files, go to a DOS prompt or start a DOS command
  606. prompt in Windows and type the following commands followed by
  607. pressing ENTER:

  609.      C:                To make the C drive active
  610.      CD \              Change to the root directory
  611.      CD CDICT          Change to the program directory
  612.      DEL *.*           Delete all of the files
  613.      CD \              Change back to the root directory
  614.      RD CDICT          Remove the program directory
  615.  
  616. If you are at a DOS command prompt, type WIN and press ENTER to
  617. start Windows.  If you are in a DOS session in Windows, type EXIT
  618. and press ENTER to return to the Program Manager.

  620. To delete the icons in the Program Manager, highlight one of the
  621. icons in the group, press the "Delete" key and then press ENTER
  622. to confirm that you intend to delete the icon.  Continue this
  623. process for each icon created for this program and (assuming you
  624. created a group for the Computer Dictionary alone) press "Delete"
  625. and ENTER one more time to remove the group.
